Overview

Marxan with Zones extends the capabilities of Marxan by providing zoning options in geographical regions for biodiversity conservation. Unlike Marxan, where areas of land or sea could only be designated as reserved or unreserved, Marxan with Zones allows for geographic areas to be assigned to specific zone, each with its own set of actions, objectives and constraints. Each zone can then contribute to an overall set of objectives for zoning design to optimize conservation goals.  This tool can more readily be adapted by marine spatial planning processes which, by nature, have multiple objectives.
