There were 57 marine fish targets identified in the Pacific Northwest Coast ecoregional assessment. Of these there was adequate spatial data representing 17 groundfish species. This information was processed into individual marine fish targets, and an additional groundfish species richness target. The 17 fisheries targets were based on National Marine Fisheries Service fishery-independent trawl surveys taken from 1977-2004. These surveys were conducted between 50 and 1,280 meters of water; we calculated Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE, or weight in kilograms / trawl area swept in hectares) for those species captured in at least 10{2a5d6d1706341671d74cd9e261e7084f344be5d0ac8e3cb469aaa53c623578a6} of the total number of hauls in that time period.
The Nature Conservancy and partners continue to examine the use of CPUE data in regional planning efforts; for the purposes of this analysis each species was calculated and ranked into distinct categories based on mean CPUE values, yielding 51 targets. A groundfish species richness target was also calculated and ranked based on 47 marine fish species in the original haul database. These include the 17 CPUE targets as well as 30 other species that were sampled less than 10{2a5d6d1706341671d74cd9e261e7084f344be5d0ac8e3cb469aaa53c623578a6} of the total number of hauls.
